Traveling down the playing every fighting game highway, we embark upon a MS-DOS game, it’s Pray For Death. WHO WILL WIN?!

Pray for Death is a 2D one-on-one fighting game for PC that draws heavily from popular arcade fighters of the mid-1990s, particularly Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat. It emphasizes fast-paced combat, long combo strings, supported by a techno-oriented soundtrack. Matches are fought in a best-of-three format using standard punches, kicks, special moves such as projectile attacks, and finishing moves designed to decisively end a round.

The game’s narrative framework places all combatants in Hell, where deceased fighters compete in a tournament organized by Lucifer. The winner is granted a return to the mortal world. The roster consists of a mix of archetypal martial artists and fantasy-inspired characters, including figures modeled after historical, mythical, and genre tropes. Each character features a distinct set of special attacks, combo chains, and finishing moves.

The game employs pre-rendered character sprites set against looping full-motion video backgrounds. These stages make use of lighting effects, reflections, and environmental animations, while the camera dynamically zooms in and out during combat.

Gameplay centers on executing lengthy combo sequences that can be chained with relative ease, along with combo breakers that allow players to interrupt an opponent’s offense. While the system supports long attack strings, it places less emphasis on precision or complex execution compared to contemporary games. Finishing moves, inspired by Mortal Kombat, serve as cinematic conclusions to matches. The are several game modes including Tournament.
